Apostolic Leadership: A New Leadership Theory Exploration and Application in Wagner University
Wanli Yang
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
Many contemporary leadership models fall short on delivering desired results and improving the effectiveness of leadership in the real world. Apostolic leadership seeks to integrate Eastern and Western approaches to leadership. Built on Hebraic wisdom, the experiences of the early apostles of the Christian church, and non-Western perspectives on leadership, apostolic leaders are vision-focused and advance a mission with authority and power, thereby leading people with love and justice (Ahn, 2019; Cook, 2012; MacNair Scott, 2014; Pederson, 2008; Wagner, 2006). In this study, I examined the degree to which Wagner University has been successful in developing and teaching apostolic leadership. I also explored and described how Chinese and American graduate- level students apply the principles of apostolic leadership in their life and work. More than 200 current Wagner students and recent alumni (n = 209) from baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degree programs completed an online survey about their understanding of apostolic leadership. Twenty-five of these participants (14 Chinese and 11 American) also responded to extensive open-ended questions that explored the application of apostolic leadership into their life and work. Based on analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data, four themes emerged that are relevant for considering the influence of apostolic leadership among students and alumni of Wagner University: (a) Leadership is Cultural, (b) Contemporary Leadership Models Are Mostly Western Dominated, (c) Apostolic Leadership is a Viable Leadership Model, and (d) Challenges to Leadership are Global. Based on these findings, I identified implications for leadership education and practice and made recommendations for practice and future research.
