Analyzing Dual Language Immersion Programs to Enable Student Retention at the Secondary Level

Across the United States, Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs have risen in popularity in recent years with the promise of producing biliterate and bicultural students. Many families of both the dominant and minority culture have gravitated towards these choice programs to enrich the school experience for their children. With the success of DLI programs in elementary school, the continued success of DLI programs at the secondary level would be expected. However, the current reality is that the number of DLI programs at the elementary level far outweighs those at the secondary level. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that contribute to student attrition in secondary DLI programs by analyzing the perceptions and experiences of students, parents, and staff to identify ways to strengthen and enhance secondary DLI programs. The study employed a mixed methods approach with surveys and interviews to examine the perceptions of 7th-12th grade students and parents of students who completed a DLI program in sixth grade and either continued or discontinued the program in middle school and/or high school. Findings from the study suggested that the primary factors driving student attrition include a negative perception of the secondary sites, the lack of electives and opportunities in the program, and the lack of awareness of the program among students and parents. To enable student retention, the participants recommended providing innovative courses and opportunities in the areas of student interest and promoting the program among all stakeholders to ensure there is a deep level of understanding of the benefits of the program. Overall, the participants found the program valuable and effective in learning language and maintaining culture and wished to see an expansion of the program.
