A Teen Mother's Determination: An Investigation of Attitudes of Former Teen Mothers with Graduate Degrees
Stephanie J. Pazmino
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Adler University
An ample amount of research has been conducted on teenage pregnancy and its adverse effects. However, there is limited research on the educational resiliency of teenage mothers. This phenomenological study explored the experiences of former teen mothers who have successfully completed a master's or doctoral degree. Their personal journeys were recounted with the emphasis of the experience of being a teenage mother while maneuvering through adulthood to achieving higher education. The phenomenological methodology utilized in this study allowed for an examination into this phenomenon. This study may inform other teen mothers, mothers, educators, healthcare workers, mental health clinicians, and policymakers of the academic resilience of teenage mothers and what strategies can be applied to assist this population in the United States. As the findings focused on the thought process there were components of support, intrinsic motivations, beliefs of educational value, and clinical implications in treating this unique population.
