Validation of the English-Language Version of the Perceived School Counselor Support Scale: Examining Student Perceptions of School Counselor Support Using the American School Counselor Association Model
Katherine Rastetter
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Shippensburg University
With adolescent mental health concerns on the rise, it is important that school counselors provide adequate support in the areas of academic, career, and social/emotional support. Yet, there are few scales that look at the perceptions of students around the support that their school counselors provide in these areas. This study sought to validate the English language version of the Perceived School Counselor Support Scale (PSCS)--short form from Karaman et al. (2019). Using a population of American high school students, the PSCS was administered in addition to measures of mattering and grit. It was hypothesized that, through use of Confirmatory Factor Analysis, the translated version of the scale would have the same factor structure as the original Turkish scale with four factor loadings based around the American School Counselor Association's domains of academic, career, social, and emotional support. In addition, it was hypothesized that the scale would have a positive correlation with the measures of mattering and grit as was consistent with the original study. The results indicated that a four-factor structure was not supported without the removal of two problematic questions. The results of the correlation indicated that there was a significant positive correlation between the results of the PSCS and measures of mattering and grit. Implications for the usage of this scale with American adolescents are wide ranging and could provide important feedback for both school districts and their communities.
