Exploring the Experiences of Urban African American Caregivers Supporting High School Graduates
Carlotta Prince
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This generic qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of African American caregivers supporting their children to graduate from high school. In this study, there was a gap in the literature regarding parental support of African American children graduating from high school. Addressing this dearth of literature entailed answering the research question, "How do urban African American caregivers describe their experiences supporting their high school graduates throughout their high school experience?" The study targeted a specific population of caregivers and a specific sample size of African Americans living in an urban setting within the United States of America. The sample included 10 caregivers who had a child graduate from an urban high school between 2015-2020. Thematic analysis was used with the qualitative software program QDA Miner Lite to analyze, code, and categorize the data derived from the transcripts into themes. The study identified five themes: early exposure to expectations for graduation, providing rewards and consequences, having a relationship with the child's school, having a relationship with the child, and the importance of extracurricular activities. The researcher's findings indicated that introducing children to graduation and post-secondary opportunities in their early developmental years is essential. Findings showed that caregivers who have a positive relationship with the child help children graduate from high school. These results may help school counselors enable their African American families to support their children through high school graduation and all students in their school setting to graduate. Future research could focus on the caregiver's relationship and the child during the elementary and middle school years as these populations were not the target of this research.
