Strength Overlooked: Towards Critical Anti-Hegemonic Pluralism and a Community College Interfaith Movement
William Zangeneh-Lester
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Graduate Theological Union
This dissertation is a call to action for the American community college educator to create and carry out a commitment to civic interfaith leadership. The community college educator as civic interfaith leader can and should examine and revise existing curricular and co-curricular resources--especially world religions courses and student organizations--by cultivating and sustaining commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion and the promotion of religious literacy. To accomplish this, I position myself as a critical culturally and historically responsive and sustaining community college educator and a civic interfaith leader committed to intentionally overcoming hegemony through the cultivation of religious literacy and pluralism informed by intersectional critical social justice--in short, a commitment to critical anti-hegemonic pluralism. The community college educator as civic interfaith leader can and should create a pathway for more informed diversity, equity, and inclusion movements by building an anti-hegemonic, pluralistic campus. This movement bridges community college campuses and the diverse communities they serve by creating new opportunities for civic engagement that work toward a more inclusive, more informed, and more just society.
