From Crisis to Celebration: Exploring How Extension Educators Experience Mentoring at a Midwestern Land-Grant University
Ashley Mueller
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Missouri - Columbia
The purpose of this grounded theory qualitative research study was to construct a framework that described the informal mentoring processes for Extension educators at a Midwestern land-grant university. The "Mentorship in Extension: An organizational model" explained participants' mentoring experiences, and it provided new understanding about mentoring in an Extension context, specifically on how Extension educators experienced mentoring; conditions that facilitated mentoring; relational motivations that influenced mentoring; and developmental mechanisms of mentorships in this setting. The findings revealed that informal, relational approaches to mentoring were the primary ways that participants experienced mentoring, providing new insight about positive work relationships in a specific organizational context. This research study has implications for professional development opportunities, new employee trainings, and mentoring program designs, and it supports further examination of mentoring and positive work relationships in Extension.
