Using a Mindfulness Smartphone App to Reduce Parenting Stress and Increase Mindful Parenting
Lily Wolcott Warner
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Adelphi University
Parenting stress not only correlates with child behavioral and emotional problems, it is also a risk factor for child abuse, child psychopathology, and students dropping out of school. Although in-person mindfulness programs have shown significant effects in decreasing parenting stress, the time and cost demands for participants may serve as obstacles for treatment access and adherence. Mindfulness smartphone apps have become widely available, and compared to in-person training tend to be more affordable, demand less time, and have the potential to reach a wider population. Brief use of the mindfulness app "Headspace" has been shown to decrease stress and improve mindfulness. However, to date, no empirical studies have examined whether mindfulness app use would decrease stress associated with parenting, despite parenting stress and mindful parenting practices being important contributors to child mental health. The present study is the first study to investigate the impact of a brief mindfulness app for parenting stress and mindful parenting. In this Single Subject Pretest-Posttest study, 11 parents of children between the ages of 5-12 years of age participated in the 10-day mindfulness app intervention "Headspace Take 10". To determine the impact of the independent variable on the dependent variables, effect sizes were calculated for each participant using Cohen's d. Based on the results of this study, the impact of mindfulness meditation app use on mindful parenting appears promising, whereas the results of the meditation app use on parenting stress were mixed. The overall "mindful parenting" gains corroborate the existing research on mindful parent interventions, demonstrating the efficacy and practical utility of mindfulness apps for parenting stress. Contributions, limitations, and future research are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
