Cultivating a Culture of Philanthropy among Alumnx of Color Who Graduated from Historically White Institutions

Previous research has indicated that alumnx of color are more likely to philanthropically support their alma mater through volunteering and advocacy. However, little research has been done to understand philanthropic behaviors among alumnx of color. Using social constructivist theory, impact philanthropy theory, and social exchange theory, this qualitative descriptive multiple-case study explored how to cultivate a culture of philanthropy among alumnx of color who previously attended historically White institutions, and examined their perspectives about the benefits of their philanthropic support. The key findings of the research study varied as the researcher provided insight to four major diasporic communities with differing needs. Overall, participants want to philanthropically support specific entities within their respective alma mater institutions, but not support the institution as a whole. The results of this research study provided important implications for practice including assessing and evaluating current university advancement infrastructures, systems, and practices, producing additional transparency when soliciting monetary gifts, developing a system to give alumnx donors more autonomy and a customized experience, diversifying university advancement departments for the sake of having equitable representation, and having university advancement scholar-practitioners complete training that is rooted in diversity, equity, inclusion, and being trauma-informed. Increased knowledge about alumnx of color philanthropic support has the potential to help higher education institutions significantly increase current and future giving in order to help them better accomplish their academic missions.
