Sacred Rejection: Latino/a Faculty and Administrators' Experience in Hispanic Seminaries
J. Gabriel Raimondo
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D./HE Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
This study presents the experiences of Latino/a faculty and administrators in Hispanic seminaries or departments at white-dominated higher education institutions. The narratives reflect that the underrepresentation of Latino leadership in Hispanic seminaries creates an environment of rejection with religious overtones. The concept derived from the experiences of Latino/a faculty and administrators prevalent in seminary institutions is sacred rejection. This systemic model of whiteness operates based on three premises. Religion as a badge of divine approval, manifest destiny, and racial superiority. Nationalism as a political banner that upholds white conservatism. And codependency as an element of mutual necessity between the oppressor and oppressed. Sacred rejection in seminaries can be mitigated by strengthening Latino identity, ministerial calling, prophetic voice, resilience, and family friendship. Creating Latino spaces in seminaries, such as unions, promoting culture, and protesting injustices through academic journals is suggested.
