African-American Cultural Museum Experiences: Redefining the Identity of African-American 5th Grade Boys
Yalon Dirickson-Martin
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Joseph's University
The qualitative multiple case study approach was utilized to describe the impact African-American cultural museum educational experiences have on redefining the identity of select African-American 5th grade boys matriculating at an urban elementary school. My research study posed one primary research question: How do African-American museum experiences redefine the identity of select 5th grade African-American boys in one urban elementary school in the northeast region of the United States? To answer this research question, African-American adolescent male students were observed and interviewed to determine if an African-American cultural museum and the academic experiences connected to this encounter redefined their identity and self-worth. Students were selected as participants through purposive sampling. Specifically, the participants were selected because they had the following characteristics: (a) African-American male, (b) classified as first-time 5th grade student, and (c) enrolled at an urban elementary school in the northeast region of the United States. The participants were observed in their academic settings before, during and after lessons on African-American culture and identity and a virtual excursion to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture museum in Washington, D.C. The Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity was utilized as the theoretical framework for this research study. The research followed In Vivo coding.
