ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Northern Arizona University
The purpose of this case study was to gain an understanding of how reading comprehension component abilities were developed through the English for business purposes (EBP) reading curriculum of the B.S. in International Business and Commerce program offered at the Universidad de Sonora. To gain this understanding, this case study analyzed the reading materials utilized in the program as well as the EBP instructors', Business majors', and the Business program coordinators' perspectives about the development of reading comprehension component abilities. In relation to the teaching of reading comprehension component abilities, the content of the required textbook series, courses' programs, and supplementary reading materials, were examined. EBP instructors and the Business program coordinator were engaged in the study through individual semi-structured interviews. Likewise, to determine the Business majors' perspectives about their development of reading comprehension component abilities, an online questionnaire was administered. According to the results, EBP instructors and students considered reading in English fundamental for their academic and professional growth. Activating or building background knowledge, promoting general comprehension skills, and practicing a specific set of reading comprehension strategies were revealed as the most prominent reading comprehension component abilities emphasized through the EBP reading program. EBP students indicated as their main challenge the limited knowledge and opportunities to practice discipline-specific vocabulary related to their field of study. Assistance in appropriate reading materials and becoming familiar with reading comprehension instructional strategies were acknowledged by the instructors as areas where they needed support. Implications of the study for supporting the EBP reading program, instructors, and students are presented.
