Outcomes from Teaching African American Students through a "How to Study" Workshop in an Introductory University Mathematics Course
Erdell Maurice
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
African Americans have suffered many negative consequences as a result of racism. African Americans are currently underperforming their White counterparts in the field of Mathematics. Several examples have indicated that the appropriate use of resources can significantly affect this gap in performance. The concepts of deep study and spaced retrieval practice have been shown in several situations to have positive effects on student's academic outcomes. This study educated African Americans students on these two concepts. The study found that students had little knowledge of spaced retrieval practice and approaches to study. There are many obstacles to students using these methods, like the timing of due dates of assignments. Participants made rational decisions on when and how to use the deep and surface approach to study. The study suggests that institutions should assess the knowledge of spaced retrieval practice and approach to study of incoming students and address any deficiencies. There is more to learn about the study process. This paper presents a five stage study process. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
