Help Me(n): A Qualitative Exploration of the Experiences of Men of Color Who Proactively Engaged in Academic Help-Seeking Behaviors at a Predominantly White Institution
Mauricio Gómez Montoya
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Kansas
Men are often characterized as unwilling to ask for help when they experience problems (Addis & Mahalik, 2003; Farrimond, 2012; Wimer & Levant, 2011). This unwillingness to seek help by men extends to the academic realm as well (Malone, 2021; Marrs et al., 2012; Wimer & Levant, 2011). This is a study about student success and aims to challenge stereotypes regarding college men's academic help seeking behaviors. The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of cisgender men of color who engaged in academic help-seeking behaviors during their time at the University of Kansas (KU). Thirteen men who self-identified as men of color participated in this interpretivist qualitative study, with the goal of learning more about their perspectives and experiences in asking for help in academic related matters. The findings of this study indicate that the participants understood the norms of masculinity, negotiated them, and decided to challenge them in pursuit of their academic goals. These men should be regarded as models of success for future men of color at KU. Their behavior allowed them to explore different versions of masculinity that were compatible with academic help-seeking. These men saw asking for help not as a sign of weakness but as an investment in their success. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
