This study used a small sample in an intensive evaluation of a nationally disseminated Head Start program. Program-specific goals were quantitatively assessed by the use of subtests from the newly developed McCarthy Scale of Children's Abilities and by two innovative classroom observation schedules. Students in an experimental and a control high school were compared in the fall and spring on their locus of control scores. An Open Campus policy was instituted in the experimental school. The experimentals increased significantly more than controls in internal control. (Author)

This study compared third-grade achievement test scores of participants in Vertical Home Start (VHS), a preschool individualized program for children from 2 to 5 years of age. Results indicate that, especially for black children, home-based preschool enrichment may more effectively promote growth in math and basic skills areas. (Author)
