Since more than one third of students in postsecondary education enroll in remedial or developmental courses (Aud et. al, 2011) and even more take advantage of different types of tutoring, remediation is an important part of our colleges and universities. While some literature speaks to the public perception of remediation (Boylan & Bonham, 2007; Boylan & Saxon, 1998; Deil-Amen & Rosenhaum, 2002; Shaw, 1997; Stratton, 1998; Stuart, 2009), few reference the beliefs regarding remediation of the students actually involved in these efforts. For this study, interviews were conducted with nine undergraduate students regarding their experiences with efforts of remediation and their attitudes, beliefs, and feelings toward these efforts. This paper focuses on the shifts in student attitudes toward a more positive outlook on remediation and four influences impacting these shifts.
