Stupnisky, Robert H.; Renaud, Robert D.; Daniels, Lia M.; Haynes, Tara L.; Perry, Raymond P. – Research in Higher Education, 2008
While a great deal of research has examined students' critical thinking skills, less is known about students' tendencies to use these skills. Specifically, little is known about what factors contribute to students developing a disposition to think critically or what impact this disposition has on college students' academic achievement. Perceived…

Goenner, Cullen F.; Snaith, Sean M. – Research in Higher Education, 2004
Empirical analysis requires researchers to choose which variables to use as controls in their models. Theory should dictate this choice, yet often in social science there are several theories that may suggest the inclusion or exclusion of certain variables as controls. The result of this is that researchers may use different variables in their…

Perry, Ronald F.; Rumpf, David L. – Research in Higher Education, 1984
The collection and analysis of survey data directed toward eliciting those characteristics of the institution, applicant, and applicant's family which affect the matriculation decision are reported. Ways in which the results may influence recruiting activities so that limited resources may yield more matriculants are provided. (Author/MLW)

Muir, Albert E. – Research in Higher Education, 1980
The logical sequence of one set of propositions regarding the association among proposal output, negotiated indirect cost rates, and overhead recovery, using a sample of 24 institutions of higher education within the SUNY system, is investigated. A model for estimating overhead a year in advance is presented. (Author/MLW)

Vickers, John M. – Research in Higher Education, 2000
Examines structural features of grade point averages (GPAs) and offers examples showing that GPAs cannot consistently determine class rank since class rank is sometimes permuted with arbitrary change of scale. Notes relativistic efforts to resolve inconsistencies are insufficient. Discusses the function of GPAs as predictors of academic…

Gardner, Don E. – Research in Higher Education, 1981
The merits of double exponential smoothing are discussed relative to other types of pattern-based enrollment forecasting methods. The basic assumptions and formulas for its use are outlined. The difficulties associated with selecting an appropriate weight factor are discussed, and the potential effect on prediction results is illustrated.…

Cook, Robert W.; Zallocco, Ronald L. – Research in Higher Education, 1983
A multi-attribute attitude model was used to determine whether a multicriteria scale can be used to predict student preferences for and attendance at universities. Data were gathered from freshmen attending five state universities in Ohio. The results indicate a high level of predictability. (Author/MLW)

Johnson, Catherine B.; And Others – Research in Higher Education, 1987
The increasing concern with equity issues in higher education, along with litigation, has prompted institutions to undertake salary prediction studies. Four models were compared: (1) entering all variables, (2) excluding rank and tenure, (3) using predicted rank and tenure, and (4) using only "objective" variables. (Author/MLW)
