Li, Xiaobao; Li, Yeping – School Science and Mathematics, 2008
Mathematics and science are important for success in school, but learning mathematics and science can be a difficult task to some students. Efforts to improve students' learning of school mathematics and science have led to reform efforts in curriculum and instruction over the past decades (e.g., National Council of Teachers of Mathematics [NCTM],…

Scharmann, Lawrence C. – School Science and Mathematics, 1991
Discussed is an alternative teaching strategy to uncover and assess a common misconception in the life sciences and to articulate its use in teaching a unit on angiosperm reproduction. The learning cycle is described, and a concept map on reproduction on angiosperms is included. (KR)

Dyche, Steven; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1993
Raises questions regarding what students are perceiving when concrete models are used to represent abstract scientific concepts. Discussion of several exploratory investigations on the role of models in science teaching is presented in three areas: (1) interactions with students; (2) effectiveness of models; and (3) spatial ability and models.…

Movshovitz-Hadar, Nitsa – School Science and Mathematics, 1993
Reviews the logic underlying mathematical induction and presents 10 tasks designed to help students develop a conceptual framework for mathematical induction. (Contains 20 references.) (MDH)

Development of Children's Ideas on Motion: Impetus, the Straight-Down Belief and the Law of Support.

Eckstein, Shulamith G.; Shemesh, Michal – School Science and Mathematics, 1993
Two studies examined the construction of children's beliefs about projectile motion of a ball rolled off a table. Describes the concepts used by children, analyzes their use as a function of age, and gives a naturalistic description of their use. Results indicate that appropriate instruction can remediate misconceptions. (MDH)
