The project director of the Toll Gate Metrication Project describes the project as the first structured United States public school educational experiment in implementing change toward the adoption of the International System of Units. The Dayton, Ohio, public schools faced the challenge from industry of providing their students with a working knowledge of the metric system by having in-service training for all the teachers.
