Embracing Controversy in the Classroom
Cannard, Kelly
Science Scope, v28 n8 p14-17 Jul 2005
Discussing controversial topics such as stem cell research is a great way for students to build scientific understanding, enhance communication skills, and develop an appreciation for civic decision making. Tackling a topic such as stem cells at the middle level, however, can be a challenge because most young adolescents see the world in black and white terms. Instead of shying away from this challenge, the author developed a five-tiered approach that allows students to delve into the gray areas that surround controversial issues and make them great topics for discussion. She suggests that to promote in-depth discussion of controversial topics, students should be provided with: (1) solid background information; (2) multiple perspectives; (3) guidelines for discussing issues as a group; (4) substantive discussion questions, and (5) strong follow-up.
