A study investigated developmental differences in children's self-perceptions of masculinity and femininity among 251 girls and 266 boys from grades 2 through 7. Meaningful developmental changes occur during the middle childhood period. Single summary scores ignore variations in gender-typed subtrait and raise study methodology questions. (JB)

Observes the impact of gender and status on the communication of 26 same-sex and 13 mixed-sex dyads of college students. Suggests that differences in the use of certain linguistic features may be more a result of a power differential than of gender. Two replication studies, using a sample of 236 high school students and 144 teachers, test the assumption that females undervalue and underestimate their achievements because of the social consequences of immodesty. Finds consistent negative consequences regardless of sex. Differences are discussed in the context of "feminine immodesty." (FMW)
