Where in the World…Does All This Stuff Come From? Geographic Inquiry into Global Trade Patterns

This guided inquiry combines a structured approach to collecting and organizing data with substantial student autonomy in the important cognitive tasks of analyzing and drawing conclusions from the data. While the teacher decides on the compelling question, students are responsible for generating supporting questions. The detailed emphasis on student questioning in this lesson distinguishes it from many other kinds of inquiry. The lesson was developed at the middle school level, but can be scaled down for elementary classrooms, or up to the secondary level, including for use in AP Human Geography. Though fundamentally geographic, it can be adapted to address political, economic, or historical aspects of global trade.
