Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v18 n5 p34-36 May-Jun 2005
In 2003, a Physical Education Grants Initiative was launched by the Future Fisherman Foundation, Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, American Association for Leisure and Recreation, and National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), as a way for schools to bring the fishing and boating experience to America's youths. Nationally, 34 schools in 20 states received more than $150,000 in grants to incorporate fishing and boating into physical education programs as a part of an effort to promote these outdoor pastimes and foster healthy and active lifestyles. This program meets the NASPE national standards for physical educators in unique ways. Tying knots and manipulating hooks, lines, bobbers, and weights assists students in the development of fine motor skills, while casting to a target and maneuvering a kayak aid in the development of muscular coordination, eye-hand coordination, and gross motor skills (national standard 1; NASPE, 2004). Fishing and boating etiquette, rules of the water, state game regulations, and ecology knowledge prepare students for leisure time even after they complete school (national standards 4 and 5; NASPE, 2004). These activities also assist students in becoming proficient in two very unique lifelong pursuits (national standard 3; NASPE, 2004), which can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages, from any occupation or physical, socio-economic, and skill-level group (national standard 5; NASPE, 2004). In addition, the various kayak strokes develop fitness (national standard 4, NASPE, 2004). In this article, the author describes how this program was successfully implemented in one grant-recipient school, Mt. Paran Christian School. (Contains 2 figures and a list of 12 resources.)
