Research Review: Ann Markusen's Concept of Artistic Dividend
Hornbacher, Judy, Ed.
Teaching Artist Journal, v6 n1 p73-80 Jan 2008
This issue of the "Research Review" features the work of Ann Markusen, Director of the Humphrey Institute's Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the University of Minnesota. Through the six articles reviewed here, Markusen develops the concept of "The Artistic Dividend," examines the impact of Artists' Centers, explores how artists earn their livings across economic domains, and illustrates how a new model of examining economic impact applies in rural settings. As she studies census data, interviews artists, and visits communities across the country, she finds a largely unremarked-upon, fascinating, creative, deeply diverse world of artists who, through entrepreneurship, hustle, civic philanthropy, and community commitment, work at their art and enhance the economic life of their communities. (Contains 4 tables and 2 footnotes.)
