Write around the Clock
Rodia, Becky
Teaching Pre K-8, v34 n6 p46, 48-49 Mar 2004
This article describes a day in the life of Charley Hoce, a teacher and poet. Hoce starts each day with at least an hour and a half of writing and revising before leaving for his teaching job at the National Trail Elementary School in New Paris, Ohio where he teaches reading and writing to first, second, and third graders, as well as Title I children who come out of those classrooms. By keeping a consistent schedule of an hour of writing and a half-hour of revision each day, skillfully integrated with his family life and full-time teaching career, Charley Hoce has completed enough poems for more than half a dozen complete poetry collections. When asked to consider what his poetic output could be if he took a leave of absence from teaching, Hoce says that is not an option.
