The Tour de Sol marked its 15th year in 2003. Sponsored by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA), the annual event showcases varied sustainable transportation modalities through a contest that evaluates vehicles according to numerous criteria, including safety, handling, practicality, and fuel (energy) efficiency. The only unifying consideration is that the vehicle must reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The event attracts a number of alternative vehicles, such as those using solar, battery electric, biodiesel, alcohol, and hybrid power. Taking part in the Tour de Sol has provided students and teachers at Trenton Central High School (TCHS) with educational value, great motivation--and a lot of fun! This article shares TCHS's experience with the Tour de Sol.
