Just as many people log onto a Web mail site (Gmail, Yahoo, MSN, etc.) to read, write and store their email, there are Web sites out there with word processing, database, and a myriad of other software applications that are not downloadable but used on the site through a Web browser. The user does not have to download the applications to a computer but rather logs into a Web site and uses the application on-line. One nice thing about online applications is that they are updated automatically so everyone is always using the current version. Collaboration and universal Web access to one's work are two additional benefits. Of course there are some hurdles and changes in mind-set that one must pass through when using these applications. These include: (1) Viability of the vendor; (2) Data privacy; (3) Speed of use; and (4) Price. Several examples of software available online are provided. (Contains 1 table.)
