The concept of "publishing" has changed again, just in the last few years, due to YouTube, Blogger, Second Life, Flickr, and other new social networking tools (John Marshall Law School, 2005). Whether they are making it possible for everyone to view a video on YouTube on how to install a hard drive on a Mac, add a collaborative student writing blog to the list for blanket permission slips sent to parents, conduct virtual collaborative meetings with others on Second Life, or view a student-created video from Flickr, the new file-sharing sites offer both a wealth of teaching potential and problems. A working knowledge of copyright and privacy helps in understanding how to use these new online collaborative tools in the classroom. This article discusses copyright and privacy issues of these file-sharing sites and provides guidelines on the appropriate use of downloaded information from these sites.
