It is commonly assumed that segregated schools are inherently bad and desegregated schools inherently good. However, existing studies have not identified conditions under which students benefit from desegregated schooling. This research studied verbal initiation and friendship choice as indicators of interracial associations and acceptance in the desegregated classroom. (MW)
