A Case Study of the Experiences of Educators with Student Retention in K-12 Online School

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Despite the growing popularity of online education, online schools have lower retention rates than their brick-and-mortar counterparts. Student retention is affected by multiple factors including the characteristics of the students, the characteristics of the educators, and the characteristics of the schools. However, there is a lack of understanding about educators' experiences with student retention in online school. This qualitative, intrinsic case study was designed to explore educators' experiences with student retention in online schools. The study was built on a conceptual framework of social constructivism, the idea that people build knowledge upon previous knowledge in a social setting. In this case study, the perspectives of 9 educators at a single case study site were explored through a series of interviews and an observation of a staff meeting. The data were collected, aggregated, and processed through an inductive analysis. The results of the study indicated there are three general factor that influence student retention in K-12 online school: the ways people are, the things people do, and the ways people feel. These generalities or themes, when applied to an educational setting, can inform the more specific practices of how to retain students in K-12 online schools. There are three recommendations for practice: provide the knowledge and resources that allow students and educators to build relationships in online schools; teach educators how to effectively communicate in the online environment; and teach educators and students how to use the tools of online education. Recommendations for future research include understanding connections between student retention and academic success or exploring the perspectives of parents in student retention.
