Lori K. Palmerton
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
This phenomenological study aimed to explore the experiences of women with psychological disabilities to ascertain factors contributing to their persistence and success toward obtaining a 4- year college degree. The research questions examined were: (a) What do women with psychological disabilities identify as contributing to their success in college? (b) How do participants describe the overall climate of the college toward women with disabilities? (c) How did their experiences with campus climate impact their journey toward degree completion? Using a feminist disability framework, 12 female participants were interviewed in three semistructured sessions to obtain the results. It was found that four factors contributed to success: (a) family, (b) faculty relationships, (c) the essential resources available on the college campus, and (d) the campus climate for women with disabilities. The study's implications included recommendations for faculty training and student services professionals.
