Chris Jellis – Research Matters, 2024
The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM), based in the North of England, recently celebrated its 40th birthday. Arising from an evaluation project at Newcastle University, and a subsequent move to Durham University, it rapidly grew in scope and influence, developing a series of highly regarded school assessments. For a relatively small…

Olney, Andrew M.; Gilbert, Stephen B.; Rivers, Kelly – Grantee Submission, 2021
Cyberlearning technologies increasingly seek to offer personalized learning experiences via adaptive systems that customize pedagogy, content, feedback, pace, and tone according to the just-in-time needs of a learner. However, it is historically difficult to: (1) create these smart learning environments; (2) continuously improve them based on…

Yu, Guoxing; Zhang, Jing – Language Assessment Quarterly, 2017
In this special issue on high-stakes English language testing in China, the two articles on computer-based testing (Jin & Yan; He & Min) highlight a number of consistent, ongoing challenges and concerns in the development and implementation of the nationwide IB-CET (Internet Based College English Test) and institutional computer-adaptive…

Wise, Stephen L. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1994
This article summarizes prior research findings on self-adapted testing (SAT) and examines the hypothesis that positive effects from SAT are the result of examinees perceiving greater control over the testing situation, which may lead to reduced test anxiety and improved performance. Prior research on perceived control is also discussed. (SLD)

Rocklin, Thomas R. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1994
Effects of self-adapted testing (SAT), in which examinees choose the difficulty of items themselves, on ability estimates, precision, and efficiency, mechanisms of SAT effects, and examinee reactions to SAT are reviewed. SAT, which is less efficient than computer-adapted testing, is more efficient than fixed-item testing. (SLD)

Ackerman, Terry A. – 1986
The purpose of this paper is to present two new alternative methods to the current goodness of fit methodology. With the increase use of computerized adaptive test (CAT), the ability to determine the accuracy of calibrated item parameter estimates is paramount. The first method applies a normalizing transformation to the logistic residuals to make…

Hsu, Tse-chi; Sadock, Shula F. – 1985
This report provides an overview of the current applications of computer technology to construct test items and/or to formulate tests according to sound measurement principles. The test items may be computer-generated from strategies programmed by test constructors, or pre-constructed by item writers and stored in computer memory. The tests…
