The Mouse, the Cheese and the Cat
Russo, James
Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, v28 n1 p38 2023
This activity provides students with opportunities to practice addition strategies and explore probability in this adaptation of the classic probability game Greedy Pig. To play, you will need a 6-sided dice, a number chart, and a brown counter to represent the mouse, and a yellow counter to represent the cheese. The game is suitable for two or three players, however students can also play against themselves. Its flexibility for individual, pair or trio play means The Mouse, The Cheese and The Cat is an excellent complement to Greedy Pig, which involves similar game mechanics but is generally played with a whole class or large group. The Mouse, The Cheese and The Cat also has the advantage of the number chart representation being embedded in the game experience, enabling the game to be more accessible to younger and less mathematically proficient students.
