Understanding How Communication Practices Led by the Head of School Inform the Culture of a Christian Elementary Staff
Thomas William Wrege
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Wisconsin
Positive organizational communication practices in elementary schools can encourage teams to be effective in their work, both individually and collectively. Such practices affect the culture, and consequently, can also promote either joy or consternation in vocation. Such communication is best led by the head of school, who is a major asset in managing how communicative processes lend themselves to workplace contentment. Without proper communication, relationships can suffer and effectiveness is reduced. The purpose of this mixed methods case study is the understanding of how communication practices, led by the Head of School, inform the culture of a Christian elementary staff. This convergent, mixed methods case study was aimed at studying such practices, but specifically within a Christian school context. Participants from Redeemer Lutheran School in Austin, Texas completed the Organisational Communication in Primary Schools Questionnaire (OPCSQ) and School Culture Triage Survey (SCTS) to provide quantitative data. Qualitative data was collected from a focus group sample of staff members and an individual interview with the head of school. Key findings included the need for a specific skill set by the head of school, and how he manages communication among the staff, utilizing various tools and techniques. Implications include that communication practices are not always effective in all settings, and some may depend on the leader. Motivating factors for positive and effective communication practices are ones that remove practices within ineffective systems and replace them with focused, improved ones that prove to be a value-add to an organization. There was a uniqueness within the parameters of a spiritual foundation. The study concludes with further implications that include needed professional development and head of school consciousness, as it relates to communication, climate, and culture. Informed communication processes are vital. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC. Further reproduction is prohibited without permission.
