Mentoring for the Emerging Christian School Leader: A Qualitative Study of the Transformative Power and Practice of Mentoring
Christopher L. Finch
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Columbia International University
Mentoring has been greatly studied and documented to be beneficial in a broad swath of society including the field of education. School leaders who have benefitted from mentoring report a greater ability to effectively lead their academic institution. Though much research exists to support mentoring in the field of education, a gap in the literature existed regarding the use of this practice for emerging Christian school leaders. This study addressed this gap by exploring the perceptions of mentoring using the Association of Christian Schools International's (ACSI) mentoring program known as Leadership U by studying both the methodology of mentoring and capturing the experiences of those who participated in these mentoring relationships. Utilizing the qualitative research methodology, this study collected and analyzed feedback from in-depth and semi-open-ended interviews with mentors and mentees from Leadership U. This study found that mentoring for Christian school leaders provided deep and meaningful relational connections with colleagues with a different level of experience and exposure to the leadership role. Furthermore, mentoring serves as a valuable, though under-utilized resource as a professional development practice in organizational leadership. Mentoring on the part of both seasoned and emerging leaders in Christian education resulted in a high degree of positive experiences, rewards, and opportunities for personal and professional growth. Leadership U participants described a rich exchange of professional ideas and resources, but most valued the personal relationship that was formed with a colleague and co-laborer, in Christ.
