Racial Disparities, Perceptions, and Evaluations: Counseling Model Choice and the Florida College System
Ocean, Mia; Hawkins, Damian; Chopra, Kobitta
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v38 n12 p1142-1156 2014
Community college students face a number of life and academic challenges. It is unknown what counseling models are currently employed by community colleges to meet their students' many needs. Representatives of Florida's 28 community colleges completed a survey detailing their counseling model, student populations, rationale behind the model choice, perceptions of model and student use, and evaluation methods for the models. Four models were discovered: in-house counseling (n = 5), outsourcing (n = 9), hybrid (n = 9), and no counseling (n = 5). Racial disparities were discovered as well. Hispanic students are overrepresented at institutions not offering counseling to their students and underrepresented in institutions offering some form of counseling. The descriptive results, practice implications, and areas for future research are detailed. Further investigation is needed into the institutional, community, and student characteristics and their effects on model choice and effectiveness.
