Adolescent Dating Violence: School Psychologists' Perceptions and Practices
Joyce Halpert
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Fairleigh Dickinson University
Adolescent dating violence (ADV) is an understudied public health crisis that affects the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional health of children today. This study assessed 130 school psychologists to determine the prevalence of ADV in their schools, their knowledge and perceptions of ADV, and their feelings of preparedness to assist victims of ADV in their schools. Results indicated that 69% of school psychologists have assisted victims of ADV, their primary response was counseling engagement, and lack of training is the primary barrier to intervention. Forty percent of school psychologists feel unprepared to assist ADV victims, with participants who received formal ADV training reporting greater feelings of preparedness. Limitations, implications of study findings, and areas for further research are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
