Teaching "Miles Morales Suspended" in a Time of Book Bans
Henry Miller; Christian Hines; René M. Rodríguez-Astacio
English Journal, v114 n2 p33-40 2024
In this article, the authors work to illustrate how "Miles Morales Suspended" by Jason Reynolds, an author whose work has been targeted by book ban efforts (Knight, 2022), can be positioned in English classrooms to teach about contemporary attacks on Black literature through book bans. The teaching outlined in this article is part of a broader goal of positioning young adult literature as a curricular vehicle for discussing contemporary issues facing young people, as this literature allows students to "engage social issues that the established canon obscures" (Durand & Jiménez- García, 2018, p. 16). The authors come to this work as a multiracial coalition of former English teachers and current teacher educators who have taught and are teaching in states with proliferating book bans. This article first outlines a brief overview of the contemporary book-banning landscape before providing a brief synopsis of the book "Miles Morales Suspended." Then the authors illustrate how Reynolds's young adult title addresses book bans and the removal of Black thought and writings from schools. Finally, the article ends with additional suggestions for classroom teachers.
