Evaluated the extent to which the Graduate Record Examinations General Test measures the same constructs for older test takers that it does for younger examinees. Results suggest that the convergent validity of the test is similar across the age groups, but discriminant validity is somewhat different for older examinees. (Author/RWB)

Compared retention of old and young adults in a Brown-Peterson task. Older adults recalled fewer letters correctly and the magnitude of the difference was related positively to the length of the retention interval. Tested the proposition that American older people are politically more conservative than middle-aged people, using the National Election Studies from 1952-80. Compared performance of high- and low-education adults on traditional and meaningful space and reasoning measures. Separate analyses of variance for reasoning and space revealed main effects for education and age on both abilities. In Study 1, upper-division university students took the Witkin Group Embedded Figures Test. Neither race nor sex differences were found. In Study 2, Black and Euro-American freshmen completed that test, a modified Kohs Black Design Test, and the WAIS Picture Completion Test. Racial differences on embedded figures appeared. Reviews developmental literature on cognitive gender differences; and compares past and present trends in gender differences, by age, from standardizations of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales and the California Achievement Tests.
