Grant, Richard A. – Developmental Psychology, 1976
The relation between Matching Familiar Figures Test performance and Piaget's construct of perceptual activity was examined with 48 third- and fourth-grade boys. (SB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Elementary Education, Perceptual Development, Research

Parish, Charles R.; Wheatley, Grayson H. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1975
This study identified new methodological variables which might affect the responses of second and third grade children to Piagetian conservation tasks. (GO)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Development, Conservation (Concept), Elementary Education

Salkind, Neil J. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1976
Descriptors: Age Differences, Elementary Education, Perception, Sex Differences

Vellutino, Frank R.; And Others – Child Development, 1975
This study investigated the hypothesis that specific reading disability is caused by visual-spatial disorder. Poor and normal readers in the second and sixth grades were presented both verbal and nonverbal stimuli and asked to identify and/or reproduce them orally and graphically. Results are discussed. (CS)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Reading Difficulty

Hartley, Deborah Green – Developmental Psychology, 1976
A total of 174 first, second, and third graders were tested to examine the relation between perceptual salience and cognitive style. The results indicated that implusives made more errors than reflectives only on trials requiring the use of the least salient dimension and that these performance differences decreased with age. (JMB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Development, Conceptual Tempo, Dimensional Preference

Bryan, Janice Westlund – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Durations of children's alpha bursts and alpha blocking were measured by EEG with eyes closed or open in the dark and with feedback visual stimulation. Alpha durations decreased across conditions. Older children had longer no-alpha durations and showed greater responsiveness to conditions. The alpha-blocking response changes during childhood.…
Descriptors: Age Differences, Attention, Attention Control, Electroencephalography

Farkas, Mitchell S.; Smothergill, Daniel W. – Child Development, 1979
Two experiments investigated the process by which children encode briefly presented spatial positions. First, third, and fifth graders were asked to judge whether a test dot occupied the same position on a card as any one of a number of dots which had been presented tachistoscopically. (JMB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Processes, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students

Willats, John – Child Development, 1992
Children were asked to draw sticks and discs that were foreshortened and not foreshortened. Seven- and 12-year-old children used a partial change of shape in drawing foreshortened sticks and a full change of shape in drawing foreshortened discs. (BC)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Children, Elementary Education, Foreign Countries

Williams, Tannis MacBeth; Aiken, Leona S. – Developmental Psychology, 1977
Development of the relation between skills of visual and auditory pattern classification was studied at the second grade, sixth grade, and adult age levels using visual and auditory representations of the same abstract information. Results showed evidence of common processing of pattern class structure for the modalities, patterns, prototypes, and…

Singer, Janice – 1993
This paper presents three experiments examining competence in the domain of proportional reasoning in several age groups (adult, and children in kindergarten, first, third, and fifth grade). In the three experiments, subjects indicated which of two flower boxes had the greater density of flowers. In experiments 1 and 2, the flowers were presented…

Ruskin, Ellen M.; Kaye, Daniel B. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1990
A study involving elementary school students in three age groups examined two explanations for the finding that young children tend to classify objects according to similarity relations, whereas adults emphasize dimensional structure. Results countered the view that children perceive objects according to a more primitive holistic structure. (RH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Classification, Cognitive Processes, Elementary Education

Boswell, Sally L. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
Dot patterns varying in type of symmetry (double, vertical and horizontal symmetry, and asymmetry) were presented tachistoscopically for 200 msec, followed by a patterned mask, to 16 subjects in each grade level: kindergarten, second, and fourth-grade. (Author/JH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Elementary Education, Grade 2, Grade 4

Bard, Chantal; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1990
The reaction times, movement times, and final accuracy of hand movements of 6, 8, and 10 year olds that were directed toward visual goals were measured by means of tasks in which direction and amplitude components of movement were required. (RH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Feedback
Boswell, Sally L. – 1975
The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of organizational processes for both verbal and spatial stimulus materials within an information processing framework. Children in grades 2 and 4 and adults were tested for their ability to report letter strings reflecting various orders of approximation to English and various dot…
