Who What and Why: A Systematic Look at College Students Mandated to Alcohol Interventions

Despite current trend analyses highlighting declining alcohol use in college students, this population remains at significant risk for alcohol's negative consequences. Though efforts to address these problems are not in short supply, research dedicated to this field has reported mild to moderate effects that decay over time. One method is to mandate students to individual or group interventions to address problematic behaviors. Typically, these students are treated as a homogenous group. However, little to no evidence supports this position. Several existing studies have documented different subgroups based on drinking patterns, but none have included why a student is referred to these interventions in the first place. The current study is the first to use the reason why a student is mandated to alcohol interventions in addition to pre-college and demographic variables to provide clarity on existing subgroups within the mandated college student population. Latent class analysis revealed three manifest classes: (1) A Single Offender class mainly referred for alcohol use (2) a Repeat Offender class characterized by multiple policy violations (3) a Repeat/Transgressor class typified by aggressive behaviors with multiple policy violations. Future implications for alcohol interventions in the college student population are explored. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
