Orosi, Greg – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2017
In this paper, we derive the result of the classical gambler's ruin problem using elementary linear algebra. Moreover, the pedagogical advantage of the derivation is briefly discussed.

Griffiths, Martin; MacHale, Des – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2017
We study here an aspect of an infinite set "P" of multivariate polynomials, the elements of which are associated with the arithmetic-geometric-mean inequality. In particular, we show in this article that there exist infinite subsets of probability "P" for which every element may be expressed as a finite sum of squares of real…

Falk, Carl F.; Cai, Li – Grantee Submission, 2016
We present a logistic function of a monotonic polynomial with a lower asymptote, allowing additional flexibility beyond the three-parameter logistic model. We develop a maximum marginal likelihood based approach to estimate the item parameters. The new item response model is demonstrated on math assessment data from a state, and a computationally…

Moses, Tim; von Davier, Alina – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2011
Polynomial loglinear models for one-, two-, and higher-way contingency tables have important applications to measurement and assessment. They are essentially regarded as a smoothing technique, which is commonly referred to as loglinear smoothing. A SAS IML (SAS Institute, 2002a) macro was created to implement loglinear smoothing according to…

Kolpas, Sid – MathAMATYC Educator, 2011
Augustus De Morgan (1806-1871) was a significant Victorian Mathematician who made contributions to mathematics history, mathematical recreations, mathematical logic, calculus, and probability and statistics. He was an inspiring mathematics professor who influenced many of his students to join the profession. One of De Morgan's significant books…

Withers, Christopher S.; Nadarajah, Saralees – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2009
Moments and cumulants are expressed in terms of each other using Bell polynomials. Inbuilt routines for the latter make these expressions amenable to use by algebraic manipulation programs. One of the four formulas given is an explicit version of Kendall's use of Faa di Bruno's chain rule to express cumulants in terms of moments.

Cho, Hoyun – Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, 2010
North Korea is one of the most closed nations in the world. It is difficult to access information about their education system. North Korea's economic system was reorganized on July 1, 2002, as well as the education system. This change has impacted North Korea's mathematics education. With limited information on North Korean mathematics textbooks,…

University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) Algebra is a one-year course covering three primary topics: (1) linear and quadratic expressions, sentences, and functions; (2) exponential expressions and functions; and (3) linear systems. Topics from geometry, probability, and statistics are integrated with the appropriate algebra.…

Braza, Peter A. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2006
Accurate and accessible expressions for the probability of having a matching birthday are obtained by using Stirling's formula and Taylor series. For interest, the results are applied to the planets of our solar system.

Goldberg, Judy, Ed. – 1984
This curriculum guide is an adaptation for students who need to proceed more slowly with new concepts and who also require additional reinforcement. The materials have been designed to assist the teacher in developing plans to be utilized in a variety of classroom settings. The guide can be used to develop both individual and group lessons. In…

Williams, Edward, Ed.; And Others – 1981
These materials are intended to provide meaningful mathematical experiences for pre-algebra students. These experiences emphasize the development of computational skills, mathematical concepts, and problem-solving techniques. This bulletin may be used as the basis for the first term of a one-year course. The complete course is divided into 12…

Glanfield, Florence, Ed.; Tilroe, Daryle, Ed. – 1992
This document is designed to assist teachers by providing practical examples of real world applications of high school mathematics. Fifteen problems are presented that individuals in industry and business solve using mathematics. Each problem provides the contributor's name, suggested skills required to solve the problem, background information…

Tunis, Harry B., Ed. – Mathematics Teacher, 1993
Describes three activities to teach mathematical concepts involving probabilities related to outcomes using "Sicherman" and other dice; geometric representations of algebraic identities; and the volume of a cone. (MDH)

Education Commission of the States, Denver, CO. National Assessment of Educational Progress. – 1977
A collection of 96 mathematics items are presented for state and local education agencies to draw upon in designing their own minimal competency tests. These items, part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, have been reviewed in terms of their appropriateness for a minimal competency test for high school graduation. The items are…
