Algebraic Scaling: Quantifying the Art of Making Good Assumptions
Paul Scovazzo
Chemical Engineering Education, v59 n2 p111-120 2025
Simplifying equations via assumptions is integral to the "engineering method." Algebraic scaling helps in teaching the engineering skill of making good assumptions. Algebraic scaling is more than a pedagogical tool. It can create a solution where one was not possible before scaling. Scaling helps in engineering proper design specifications or can reveal critical system parameters. Pedagogically, it removes the mystery of why, in general, some terms are assumed to be negligible by the professor.
