Boas, R. P., Jr. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1972
The problem of getting a correct result when a fraction is reduced by cancelling a digit which appears in both the numerator and the denominator is extended from the base ten situation to any number base. (DT)

Robertson, Jane I. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1978
A comparison of four methods of finding the maturity value of the principal is presented. The four methods are: table, period-by-period iterative calculation, formula, and Binomial Theorem. (MP)

Schultz, James E.; Waits, Bert K. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1979
The calculator is used to solve certain formidable equations, which arise naturally and which may be difficult or impossible to solve by standard methods, by a method of successive approximations. (MP)

Plagge, Richard – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1978
Algorithms are developed and presented for the addition and multiplication of positive rational numbers using only their repeating decimal representation. (MN)

Cook, Lyle; McWilliam, James – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1983
The problem of finding cube roots when limited to a calculator with only square root capability is discussed. An algorithm is demonstrated and explained which should always produce a good approximation within a few iterations. (MP)

Whitman, Betsey; Cook, Donald – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1977
A method for teaching students to solve complex algebraic equations is described. The method, which relies on sequentially reducing the complexity of the problem has been successfully used with secondary students and in remedial college courses. (SD)

Ford, Janet E.; McLeod, Douglas B. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1977
In this study, a unit on flow charts was developed and its effectiveness in helping teachers explain some algorithms from arithmetic was determined. Findings showed that constructing flow charts helped students give a more complete list of instructions for an algorithm, but didn't help them give better justifications for algorithms. (DT)

Butts, Thomas – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1981
An unusual alternative starting point for instruction in a beginning calculus course that focuses on Fixed Point Iteration (FPI) is presented. (MP)
