Evaluated difference in level of alienation between Nigerian secondary school students who were drug users (N=97) or non-users (N=119). Results supported hypothesis that the alienated personality would be more susceptible to drug abuse than other personality types. Results suggest need for efforts to reduce student alienation. The study measures: powerlessness, discontentment, cynicism, detachment, hopelessness, elitism, and democratic deficiency. Attitudes and characteristics of adolescents who like heavy metal music (HMM) were explored in a study of 52 adolescents (largely White males) who liked HMM and 123 who did not in suburban Atlanta (Georgia). HMM is discussed as a reflection of, rather than a cause of, adolescent alienation. (SLD)
