Sage Research Methods Cases
This case study shares lessons from an Indigenous research project based on Elder Knowledge about culture camps. Culture camps and land-based learning have become common practices in Indigenous education circles. This project brings into focus "kiskinohmakewina" (teachings) from Elders from two Cree communities who were invited to share their knowledge about how culture camps can support health and well-being and how culture camps can be improved. The Elders in this research project were selected as they had helped at culture camps with their ceremonial and cultural knowledge. An Indigenous research process is often not clearly understood, and this case is intended to clarify how Indigenous knowledge can guide the process of knowing and being. It is important to listen to and learn from the Elders about their roles and their views. This research project is significant because it used an Indigenous epistemological and ontological framework to guide the process of involving Elders to ensure proper protocols and processes were followed. The Elders shared that four critical aspects of seeking Indigenous knowledge include protocol, intent, relationships, and knowledge. These cultural and spiritual ways can inform how others engage in Indigenous research. [This content is provided in the format of an e-book.]
