The theoretical and methodological concepts for research on aptitudes as cognitive processes are discussed. Individual differences constructs are reviewed in relation to cognitive processing models, and studies of short-term memory are reviewed. A coordinated approach to the study of aptitude as information processing is recommended. (Author/RD)

A commentary is made on each of five symposium papers on the unification of cognitive process theory and differential psychology. Future research directions are reviewed within a new theoretical framework as to the process nature of aptitudes and general intelligence. In four experiments to replicate and extend the findings of Shuell and Keppel (EJ 016 150), "fast" and "slow" learners were brought to a similar learning criterion, with the result that their forgetting curves were parallel. Developed five knowledge tests and one implicit reasoning test designed to be short, correlated with cognitive aptitude, unobtrusive, and capable of administration in computer, e-mail, or paper-and-pencil forms.
