Kosko Karl W.; Singh, Rashmi – Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, 2018
Multiplicative reasoning is a key concept in elementary school mathematics. Item statistics reported by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) assessment provide the best current indicator for how well elementary students across the U.S. understand this, and other concepts. However, beyond expert reviews and statistical analysis,…

Casey, Beth M.; Lombardi, Caitlin McPherran; Pollock, Amanda; Fineman, Bonnie; Pezaris, Elizabeth – Journal of Cognition and Development, 2017
This study investigated longitudinal pathways leading from early spatial skills in first-grade girls to their fifth-grade analytical math reasoning abilities (N = 138). First-grade assessments included spatial skills, verbal skills, addition/subtraction skills, and frequency of choice of a decomposition or retrieval strategy on the…

Roche, Anne – Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, 2010
A considerable body of research exists on students' understanding of decimal fractions and the prevalence and persistence of common misconceptions related to this understanding. Results from major studies such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in the United States and the Concepts in Secondary Mathematics and Science (CSMS)…

Alexander, Cathleen Marie – ProQuest LLC, 2013
Mathematics, in general, and algebra courses, in particular, have been categorized as "gatekeepers" for higher education, better jobs, and even citizenship. For many low-income and working adults, community college is the institution where they choose to develop their mathematics understanding so they can pursue their dreams.…

Rivera-Batiz, Francisco L. – Journal of Human Resources, 1992
Probit analysis of arithmetic scores from the Young Adult Literacy Assessment Survey (840 males and 1,077 females) found that quantitative literacy skills are a major factor in the likelihood of full-time employment. Low quantitative literacy appears to be associated with the lower probability of employment among young African Americans. (SK)

Muth, K. Denise – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1992
To determine how middle school students cope with the demands of arithmetic word problems, 140 eighth graders (67 males and 73 females) had to solve problems modeled after those of the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Extraneous information and extra steps reduce the accuracy of students' word problem solutions. (SLD)

Marshall, Sandra P. – 1986
Open-ended individually administered questions can ascertain whether students can reason about arithmetic problems. Free response test items are useful in assessing students' thought processes as they solve mathematics story problems. Since story problems do not state explicitly which arithmetic operations are required for solution, students must…
