Between Anxiety and Desire: Chinese Middle-Class Families' Drive for Study Abroad
Chinese Education & Society, v57 n3-4 p257-278 2024
This article explores the intersecting desires and anxieties of Chinese middle-class families and students in their pursuit of studying abroad in the United States. Through the qualitative analysis of narratives from students and interview data, the findings reveal that the decision for studying in the U.S. is deeply intertwines with anxieties about academic competition, competition, future career prospects, and the preservation of socio-economic status. Parental concerns about the limitations of the Chinese education system and the competitive nature of the domestic job market further drive the pursuit of international education. Gender-specific concerns also play a significant role in the decision of such cross-border academic adventures. The study also highlights the need for localized theoretical approaches to better understand these educational dynamics within the Chinese context, as Western theories may not fully capture the unique socio-cultural and political factors at play.
