Investigated historical trends in the assertion training literature by content analyzing documents published between 1942 and 1977. Revealed that although the assertion training literature has shown a very rapid acceleration of growth, empirical documentation of the effects of important parameters of training and treatment is lacking. Subjects undergoing assertion training experienced a decrease in dream recall and dream pleasantness. The measures of repression did not account significantly for dream recall or pleasantness variance. Findings are more supportive of interference theory than repression theory. (Author)

Examined the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) profiles of peer-nominated assertives, unassertives, and aggressives (N=80). Investigated assertive behavior among Black male patients (N=48) under White vs. Black interpersonal partner conditions. Developed a 33-item, situation-specific instrument that measures assertiveness of adolescents. Based on data from 682 elementary and secondary school students, adequate reliability and validity of the Assertiveness Scale for Adolescents (ASA) were obtained when tested against several variables about which predictions could be made. Examined the relationship of the Irrational Beliefs Test (Jones 1968) to depression, locus of control, cognitive set, and interpersonal assertion competencies in 114 college women.
